An Avocado a Day Keeps Dog Arthritis Away

Who knew that avocados, which are considered poisonous to dogs, can be used in the treatment of dog arthritis?
Avocados contain persin, a substance toxic to dogs. Persin causes intestinal irritation which leads to nausea as well as diarrhea. Unfortunately, in the US, the most commonly sold variety, the Guatemalan, contains the highest amounts of the toxin.

Nonetheless in small quantities, avocados can help deal with dog arthritis. As a result the popular supplement for dog arthritis, Dasuquin, is safe to administer to dogs.

Dog arthritis

Studies show that 20% of adult dogs and about 90% of old dogs have dog arthritis. The disease largely affects older dogs, and being overweight and not exercising enough can contribute to the condition. Young dogs are also not spared - there are dog breeds that are genetically predisposed to arthritic conditions such as hip dysplasia.

Dog arthritis makes it difficult for your pet to move. If the disease is not treated, your dog will have a sedentary lifestyle  and will be in chronic pain. Dog arthritis will put your pet at higher risk of getting ailments that are a result of inactive living.

Dasuquin

One of the most popular supplements used for dog arthritis is Dasuquin.

Dasuquin’s unique ingredient is avocado soybean unsaponifiables. Although avocados are toxic to dogs, the supplement contains safe quantities. Researchers believe that avocados have anti-inflammatory properties that will greatly reduce stiffness and pain related to dog arthritis.

The other components of the supplement are glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, all of which contributes to Dasaquin’s efficacy.  I would also recommend the supplement be given in conjunction with physical therapy and other prescribed medications.

Dog arthritis cannot be belittled. It greatly affects your pet’s life by preventing your dog from moving. Dasuquin is a very helpful baseline dog arthritis treatment and can reduce or eliminate the need for stronger prescription medications.
