Why Your Dog Could Be Allergic to Dog Arthritis Supplements!

Supplements can be very effective in controlling the symptoms of dog arthritis; unfortunately, in some dogs, they can irritate the digestive tract and can cause skin itching. When your dog experiences any of these side effects, your pet may be allergic to the supplement it is receiving.

Allergic reactions in dogs happen when they are constantly exposed to an allergen (also called an antigen). Animal protein from beef, pork, or chicken; cow or pig’s liver, natural flavorings, and shellfish are common allergens that are found in some dog arthritis supplements. Therefore, it is important to find a supplement that will be safe for your allergic dog.

How then can a dog owner identify if a supplement is safe? Dogs cannot be allergic to something it was never exposed to. This means a dog’s immune system can only develop an allergic reaction to something the dog was exposed to.
The only effective way of choosing a dog arthritis supplement that does not cause any allergic reaction is through the use of a trial and error method.

Below are simple instructions:

    * Start by feeding your pet with food that does not seem to cause any allergic reactions.
    * Administer Adequan or Cartrophen.  These medications are generally safe for allergic dogs (see my article on these drugs). Do this for 4 weeks.
    * You can then use a dog arthritis supplement. Below is a list supplements you can test. Remember this is trial and error but it would be best to follow the order being suggested:
         1. Dasuquin is a perfect start since it is the benchmark of supplements; however, it does contain beef and shellfish.
         2. Synovi G3 granules is very hard to find but it is made from a “novel marine protein”, which makes it hypoallergenic.
         3. Deva Vegan Glucosamine with MSM and CMO has ingredients coming from vegetable sources making more hypoallergenic compared to supplements containing animal products.
         4. Omega-3 Supplements such as Welactin are safe for dogs. The best kinds are the ones made from fish oil; though, flaxseed can also be a good source (please read my previous article on flaxseed before considering using it). These supplements can also be taken with glucosamine products.
    * Do not make any changes to your dog’s diet as your administer the dog arthritis supplement for two weeks. When you observe any scratching or vomiting, or when your dog gets diarrhea, then your dog may be allergic to the supplement. Stop the treatment immediately. When your dog’s allergic reaction has subsided, re-do the process.

Based on my personal experience, finding the safest dog arthritis supplement for my allergic 9 yr. old German shepherd and Labrador mix was tedious and a time consuming process. However when I see my dog running and jumping with happiness every time we play fetch, it made everything worth it.
